Gunmen shoot, injure five in taxi downtown Kingston
BUSINESS operators along a section of Princess Street in downtown Kingston pulled down their shutters early yesterday after two gunmen shot up a taxi and injured five people, including two women, along the busy street.
Two of the injured persons were admitted to hospital in a serious condition, while another was listed as stable. The other two were treated and released.
According to the police, eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the taxi was picking up passengers on Princess Street when two gunmen approached the vehicle and opened fire. All the occupants were hit.
The police, who were quick on the scene, challenged the gunmen and a shoot-out ensued, sending members of the public scampering for cover.
It was not ascertained if any of the gunmen were hit, but the police said that a man who turned up at the Kingston Public Hospital with gunshot wounds was not one of those who engaged them in a gunfight.
“That man was shot in the St Andrew South Police Division.” said Corporal Oniel Patterson of the Constabulary Communications Network.
