Cop facing assault charges
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine – Constable Paul Dixon, 26, of the Trelawny Division, was arrested Tuesday on assault charges.
He appeared in the Spanish Town Criminal Court and was offered bail in the sum of $80,000.
Allegations against Dixon are that on December 23, 2004, he was on duty at the intersection of Young Street and Beckford Street in Spanish Town, St Catherine, when he signalled a motorist to stop. He requested the motorist’s documents and an argument reportedly developed.
It is alleged that during the argument the motorist used the vehicle to hit the cop to the ground. The man allegedly reversed the car and drove it down on the policeman again.
The cop pulled his gun from his waist and fired a shot through the windscreen of the car, which hit the motorist in the neck.
The matter was reported to the Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI). The BSI collected statements and submitted the completed file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for his directions.
Last week the DPP ruled that Dixon – who was transferred to Trelawny during the investigation – be arrested and charged with assault and wounding with intent.
Attorney-at-law Earl Hamilton pleaded for bail for his client after he was arrested at court on Tuesday. Senior St Catherine Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar-Gayle granted bail in the sum of $80,000 with surety and placed a stop order on Dixon, preventing him from leaving the country.
Dixon is scheduled to return to court on November 21 when the case will again be mentioned.
