St Elizabeth man killed by train
Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth – The community of Bromington Hall in South East St Elizabeth is mourning the death of one of its own, 54 year-old Ashton Williams, who was run over by a bauxite train on Friday night.
Police say Williams, who it is believed was drunk, was sitting on the railway tracks close to Lititz at about 8:40 pm when the accident happened.
The train driver reported that on rounding a bend, he saw Williams sitting on the tracks with his head in his hands. The driver reportedly applied the brakes but the train did not stop in time, severing Williams’ body as it ran over him.
The train was travelling west from Port Kaiser to the Alpart alumina/bauxite plant at Nain.
Lance Neita, Alpart’s public relations manager, said the company would investigate what he described as a “tragic and regrettable” incident and would do all in its power to “support other investigations” by the relevant authorities.
Neita stressed that his company placed a high priority on safety and had in place an “intense community safety” programme.
“We consistently preach the message of safety in the community and in the schools,” Neita said.
