Magistrate warns women beaters
RESIDENT Magistrate Judith Pusey yesterday sent a strong warning to men who beat up on their women, when she sentenced three men for assaulting their spouses in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
RM Pusey was stern as she warned a woman who had attempted to plead for her child’s father, Anthony Renekie, who was arrested and charged for hitting her on the mouth.
“I would like to discontinue this case, Your Honour,” the woman said.
“No,” the magistrate replied, “All you girlfriend beaters, when you come before me there will be no hugging and kissing and making up inside here.”
Police say Renekie and his girlfriend were involved in a dispute when he used his fist to hit her on the mouth.
“You tump har inna har mouth?” the magistrate asked the accused.
“Me hand catch har inna har face, mam,” Renekie replied.
“You hand just move and lick har?” RM Pusey asked as police officers and members of the public burst out in laughter.
Renekie was then ordered to serve a 20-day sentence.
Dunroy Pownall, who was also charged with beating his girlfriend, was more frank.
“I can’t take her ways and attitude no more,” Pownall said as he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.
“Then you walk away. What you want to do? Beat her attitude out of her?” the magistrate asked, “So how long you want to stay for beating her attitude out
of her?”
He was also sentenced to 20 days at hard labour.
Mario Kerr, who admitted to using a piece of board to hit his woman on her leg, also got 20 days in prison.
