JLP supporters celebrate Campbell’s resignation
RAMBLE, Hanover – Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporters on Sunday met news of Senator Colin Campbell’s resignation over the $31 million Trafigura scandal with unbridled celebration.
The JLP supporters, who had gathered at the Knockalva High School, shouted yes! yes! when JLP leader Bruce Golding announced that Campbell, the information and development minister and general secretary of the People’s National Party (PNP), had resigned.
“On the seven o’ clock news it was announced that Colin Campbell had resigned both as a member of the Cabinet and as general secretary of the People’s National Party,” Golding announced to howls and whistles from scores of supporters in the jam-packed auditorium.
“Full time now,” and “Enough is enough, we are not for sale,” were some of the shouts from the JLP supporters.
Said Golding: “Earlier today, a statement was issued that the prime minister had given instructions that the $31 million that the People’s National Party had collected was to be returned.” In response, supporters screamed “No! No!”
“The People’s National Party may want to think that that is the end of the matter,” added Golding.
The JLP leader was later cautioned by one supporter to “mind them sue you”. But Golding continued: “I have news for them, no sankey no gwine sing soh,” and added that the issue would not now close with a mere resignation.
There was laughter when Golding asked: “So if there’s nothing wrong with it, why you give it back?”
