Warmington ‘brushes aside’ JLP Area Council chairmanship
JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) member of parliament Everald Warmington says he will not reconsider his decision to step down as Area Council 2 chairman as he is fed up with having his concerns ‘brushed aside” by the party.
The South West St Catherine MP told the Observer that he has had enough of party officers ignoring concerns, hence, his decision to resign with immediate effect yesterday.
“My issue is really with the party and the way it has handled issues having to do with the selection of candidates in the Area Council,” he explained a few hours after his resignation became public.
Warmington, whose resignation appeared to have been in the making since September 10, said, “the party’s constitution states that the chairman of the Area Council must sit in the meetings having to do with the selection of candidates for the Area Council. But this has been ignored, and despite my writing to the general secretary (Karl) Samuda, the issue was brushed aside,” he told the Observer.
His letter, which was released to the media, charged the party’s leadership with arrogance and disregard for the party’s constitution.
“I do not feel comfortable with the current methods by which decisions are made by the officers of this party in ignoring the rules and regulations of the party in arriving at such decisions,” Warmington said in his letter. “Therefore, I cannot allow my presence as chairman of Area Council 2 to legitimise the constant illegal decisions being made by the group…”
