Lauderhill’s vice-mayor vows to open that city to Jamaicans
DANIEL TOWN, Trelawny – Dale Holness, vice-mayor of the city of Lauderhill in Florida, USA, is planning to make his city a gateway for Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean.
“Lauderhill is going to be the gateway for Jamaicans to the USA. I envision tournaments between here and Lauderhill. I anticipate that we will build and maintain cultural and professional ties in addition to sports,” he told the Observer on Saturday shortly after a twinning ceremony to fomalise the sisterhood between Trelawny’s capital, Falmouth, and Lauderhill at the Trelawny Multi-purpose stadium.
The ceremony, which was held during an interval in the inaugural Air Jamaica Cup between Jamaica and a USA Invitational XI, was attended by several local government and business officials including representatives of the Lauderhill, Trelawny and Montego Bay Chambers of Commerce.
Holness, who was born in Hanover, said the ceremony symbolised a commitment to ensure that both cities benefit from the almost billion-dollar trade between Jamaica and South Florida.
In the meantime, he said plans are under way in Lauderhill to construct a stadium similar to the one in Trelawny, with a view to establish that city as the ‘cricket capital’ of Florida.
