3 killed in St James over the weekend
WESTERN BUREAU – An ex-convict was among three persons murdered in St James between Friday night and yesterday, pushing the murder tally to 43. Cops have neither motives nor suspects for the murders.
The police have identified the dead as Sylvanos ‘Humble’ Campbell, 52, of Amity Hall; Garfield Morrison, 25, vendor of Somerton and Dorian ‘Sly’ Allen, a 19 year-old mechanic from Orange.
The Amity Hall police said Campbell’s body was found lying on its side, on a piece of sponge on the floor behind his front door, with bullet wounds to its chest, mouth, back and right hand. Three .45 spent shells were recovered from the scene.
According to Woman Constable Pamella Bowen of the Amity Hall police, Campbell was released from prison in February after serving a seven-year sentence for assault occasioning bodily arm. She added that he was also arrested in 1978 and 1982 for the raping of a six year-old girl and a four year-old girl respectively, but was acquitted of the two charges. Since his release from prison, the cop said, Campbell had been accused of making advances towards young girls in the district but was not officially charged.
Morrison was shot to death while walking among a group of men on Saturday night. Two other members of the group were also injured. Police gave their names as Anthony Allen, 31, and Andre Morris, 23. All three are from Somerton in the parish. According to the Montego Bay CIB, at about 9:00 pm on Saturday, the men were walking along Church Hill Avenue from the Charles Gordon Market when they were attacked by a man on a pedal cycle.
The man pulled a gun from his waist and fired in the direction of the group. Morrison, Morris and Allen were hit and taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where Morrison died, Morris admitted in serious but stable condition and Allen treated and released. The police have not established a motive for the attack.
In the other incident, which took place on Friday, police said at about 7:30 pm, Allen was seen running along Barnett Street in the city. He later collapsed in the vicinity of the Barnett Oval. The police said, upon investigations, it was discovered that he was stabbed. He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
