‘Deacon’ remanded on conspiracy charge
Ocho Rios, St Ann – A Lime Hall man, whom cops had identified as a church deacon, was yesterday remanded on conspiracy charges in connection with an attempted robbery.
Errol Green, 28, has been booked to return to court next Friday. He was remanded yesterday after his attorney, Oswest Senior-Smith, told the court he would not be applying for bail as case documents were not ready and therefore he could not get a clear picture of the circumstances surrounding the case.
Green has been in custody since the February 23 robbery attempt, during which the police shot dead three of his alleged accomplices, but was charged on Tuesday after intensive police investigations.
His case has created quite a stir in this resort town as churches scramble to distance themselves from him.
While the police initially said Green was a deacon at the Lime Hall Pentecostal Church, the pastor at that church denied that the accused man was a member of his flock.
According to the man of the cloth, Green was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, in the same community.
But in a letter to the Observer yesterday, a member of the Church of God, while admitting that Green was a member of the church, denied that he was a deacon or had ever held any post there.
“He used to be very active, up to about 2002, but since then he just visits from time to time,” the female member, who asked not to be named, told the Observer.
“As a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, I am saddened by this disheartening and embarrassing situation,” said her letter. “But we the members of the Lime Hall Church of God of Prophecy still hold resolute to our belief and faith in God. I do not believe that Green (acted) because he is from the Church of God of Prophecy. I strongly believe whether he was from Pentecostal, New Testament, or whichever denomination, he would have been involved because he was living out of the will of God.”
