Woman accused of chopping elderly man
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine – A 23 year-old woman, who has been accused of using a machete to severely chop a 73 year-old man all over his body will return to court on March 3.
Portmore resident, Jennifer Smith was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation during her last court appearance on Tuesday.
It is alleged that the incident occurred at about 11 o’clock on the morning of January 15, 2004, while Benjamin McClean was in a wooded area in the Dunbeholden Community in South St Catherine cutting wood to make a coal kiln.
While there, Smith approached him, engaged him in conversation, and complained that her family disapproved of her boyfriend, the court was told.
But after McClean told Smith that she did not need a boyfriend, she grabbed his machete and chopped him on his foot, his neck and his hand.
McClean was forced to jump into a nearby canal in order to escape.
He later reported the matter to the police and Smith was arrested and charged for the offence.
