Grace Kennedy Foundation names scholars
Four students pursuing studies in law, hospitality and tourism management, finance, and business are this year’s Grace, Kennedy Foundation scholars.
They are:
. SeShauna Wheatle, who received the Grace, Kennedy Jamaica Scholarship;
. Natalie Douglas – Grace, Kennedy Foundation Scholarship;
. Fabian A Whyte – the Carlton Alexander Scholarship; and
. Dwayne Morrell – the Bruce Rickards Scholarship.
The announcement was made recently by Foundation chairman, Peter Moss-Solomon.
Wheatle is a first-year student in the Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies (UWI). Her path of excellence became evident from the Common Entrance Examination level when she gained the Victoria Mutual Building Society Scholarship and attended Campion College. At Campion, she was consistently among the top two in her class, having gained First and Second Class honours for 16 out of 18 school terms. Wheatle was first in her graduating class.
Her Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), formerly known as (CXC), performance was exemplary. She gained eight distinctions and placed second in Jamaica in French. At the Caribbean Advancement Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), Wheatle gained the highest grades in Spanish, History and English Literature at Campion College.
Douglas is pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management, which is based at the University of Technology (Utech) and is administered jointly by Utech and UWI.
She gained eight subjects at CSEC with six distinctions and two credits, in 2001, and she was honoured by the Jamaica Association of Principals for gaining the highest marks in Jamaica for Social Studies. Her performance at CAPE was equally outstanding with credits in English Literature, History and Communication Studies. She also gained credits in Sociology and General Paper at CAPE.
Whyte, a second year student at Utech, is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance. A graduate of Jamaica College, he obtained eight subjects at CSEC with five distinctions.
Morrell, the second person to have been awarded the Bruce Rickards Scholarship (established in 2002), is a third-year Business Administration student at Utech majoring in production and operations management.
A past student of Kingston College, Bruce Rickards’ alma mater, Dwayne performed well at CSEC gaining one distinction and four credits.
Voluntarism and community involvement is an important consideration in the award of the Bruce Rickards Scholarship and Dwayne did not disappoint in this regard. He has volunteered as a teacher of Mathematics at the YMCA and always plays an active role in his community’s Labour Day projects.
