Trelawny cemeteries get million-dollar facelift
WESTERN BUREAU – More than 19 cemeteries in Trelawny are being given a million-dollar facelift in time for the Christmas holidays.
The project, which got underway recently, is being undertaken by the Trelawny Parish Council and will be funded through the Equalisation Fund made available by the Local Government Ministry.
Mayor of Falmouth, Jonathan Bartley, said the final resting places had been neglected over a long period and were now difficult to upgrade.
“Cemeteries in districts such as Dromilly, Bounty Hall and Bunkers Hill all required the use of power saws to effectively clear the areas of the thick vegetation that have accumulated from a number of years of neglect,” he told the Observer.
In addition to the bushing, the mayor said, they were repairing a number of fences and building some new ones.
He said that $3 million had been allotted to the parish for this year’s Christmas work programme. That work, he said, will include bushing of roadways, cleaning of drains and the marling of some roads.
“The taxpayers are expecting production from the Christmas work programme and. people will have to put in work, or they will not be paid. We are not giving away money,” he added.
