$2M Nyammins and Jammins Festival begins Monday
WESTERN BUREAU — More than 55 4-H Clubs have already registered for Monday’s staging of the St James 4-H Advisory Council’s Nyammins and Jammins food festival.
According to organisers, the event will cost about $2 million to stage.
“There will be a whole range of Jamaican food items on show and already more than 55 4-H Clubs have registered,” co-ordinator, Marline Stephenson-Dalley said at the press launch in Montego Bay this week.
Nyammins and Jammins attracted more than 9,000 patrons and netted half a million dollars last year. They intend to improve on those figures this year by showcasing the best of everything, Dalley said.
The objective, she said, is to attract a bigger crowd and push profits up to $1 million.
“This year, patrons will be able to enjoy mouth-watering samples of Jamaica’s confectionery items, authentic jerk, soups, curry, seafood and more,” she said. “There will be over 60 booths exhibiting, demonstrating and sharing information on a wide range of areas (including) horticulture, skills training, finance, art and craft, the environment, housewares and agriculture,” she added.
Children will not be left out.
Planned activities and rides include the titanic, simulator, bounce-about, basketball hoops, face painting and horseback riding. And the ‘Mr and Ms St James 4H’ contest will again test the knowledge, awareness, talent and intelligence of Clubites who will compete for a range of prizes.
The popular group, Fab 5 Incorporated, will headline the entertainment segment of the day’s events while the Heroes Day activities will run from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. The show will also feature cabaret singers, Mackie Conscious and Kevin Downswell, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) gospel festival 2003 winner and former lead singer of the Grace Thrillers, Leroy Smith.
Proceeds will go towards the ongoing agricultural skills training programme for the growing number of 4-H members across St James.
