Two dead in St Thomas
Norval Lewis, a 40 year-old farmer of Ginger Hall in Bath, St Thomas is dead and his nephew, Lenroy Laing, has been charged with murder after an early-morning quarrel between the two yesterday.
According to Observer sources, the men, who have a history of frequent quarrels, began another round of verbal sparring at about 6:30 on Friday morning.
Lewis, according to reports, accused his 29 year-old nephew of throwing urine at his doorway.
During the argument, Laing allegedly used a stone to hit Lewis in his chest. The 40 year-old was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.
And mystery surrounds the death of 23 year-old Spring Gardens mason, Jevon Bogle, who died about three hours earlier than Lewis.
According to police reports, Bogle went to bed with his girlfriend Thursday night and she was awakened by the sound of him groaning at about 3:15 Friday morning. Blood and mucus was reportedly seen gushing from Bogle’s head and he was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.
The police have taken a man in custody in connection with his death but refused to supply any further details. It remained unclear, yesterday, what caused Bogle to bleed from the head, or if the man now in custody shared a home with the deceased.
Investigations continue into the incident.
PCA cracks down
The Health Ministry has asked the police to take action against a retailer who ignored the ministry’s warnings to stop selling unregistered pesticides.
As the Pesticides Control Authority (PCA) intensifies its monitoring of the sale of pesticides, three retailers were on July 8 issued with stop-sale orders. One ignored the order and continued to sell the products.
The pesticides ordered removed from shelves have at least one active ingredient that is not registered for use in Jamaica. The list of items include Combat’s spray, Quick Roach formula, Quick Ant Formula, Killing Gel, and Source Kill Roach. Also on the list under the D-Con brand is Rat and Mouse Bait Blocks, along with Hot Shot’s Mouse Killer, Roach and Ant Killer.
Black Flag’s Ant and Roach Killer; Kill Zone Ant and Roach Killer and Wasp, Bee and Hornet Killer are also not to be sold in the country, as well as Bengal’s Wasp and Hornet and their Ultra Dust fire ants killer. Terror outdoor Ant Killer and Sevin Lawn and Garden granules complete the list.
Importing, manufacturing, selling or distributing unregistered pesticides is prohibited under the Pesticides Act.
KSAC to tour Corporate Area Monday
Kingston Mayor Desmond McKenzie and the councillors of the KSAC will tour the Corporate Area on Monday, to get first-hand knowledge of the problems facing the various communities.
The tour begins at noon at the local government body’s chambers.
McKenzie made the announcement, Friday, after a KSAC-hosted civic ceremony in recognition of the country’s national heroes.
The struggles that the national heroes undertook for the betterment of the country, McKenzie said, “must be recognised in such a way that we work assiduously, as of today, to give justice to their struggle.”
