NY councilman slain at City Hall
JAMES Davis, the New York City councilman who maintained close ties to that city’s large Caribbean community, was shot dead yesterday by a political rival at New York’s City Hall in Manhattan.
The shooter, Othniel Askew, who ran against Davis in this year’s council elections, was killed by a police bodyguard for the council speaker, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
Videotape from cameras at City Hall show Askew and Davis walking together into City Hall, Bloomberg said. A few minutes later, gunfire broke out.
Davis, 41, was elected in 2001 to represent the council’s 35th District in Brooklyn, the borough that arguably is home to the majority of Caribbean nationals living in New York.
