Craig Hill water supply contaminated
THE National Water Commission (NWC) said an alternative water supply source to serve Gordon Town and Mavis Bank is expected to be put into operation on Tuesday, temporarily replacing the Craig Hill supply which was taken out of service Wednesday due to contamination.
NWC public relations manager, Charles Buchanan said a truck carrying a load of tar for a road repair project overturned in Petersfield district, spilling the oil near the Craig Hill water supply system last week Friday. However, the spillage had no effect on the water system until heavy rains on Tuesday washed the oil into the water and contaminated it.
Water was being trucked to residents in the affected areas, the NWC said.
The water commission said the clean-up of the spillage started yesterday, in collaboration with the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management. The commission said scientific officers were analysing, accessing and cleaning up the contaminated source so that piped water supply can be restored as early as possible.
Although Buchanan said it would be difficult to say when the clean-up would be concluded, he was hoping that it would be completed within a week.
