Teen killed in love triangle, man nursing machete wounds
WESTERN BUREAU — A teenager was Tuesday chopped to death and a man hospitalised with machete wounds following a fight over a woman in the busy Negril bus park in Westmoreland.
The dead teen was identified as Dwight Brown, a 17 year-old labourer of Negril, while Robert Lewis, 25, of the White Hall Housing Scheme, has been admitted to hospital under police guard.
The police said that at about 1:50 pm Tuesday, Brown and Lewis became embroiled in a heated argument in the bus park after, it is alleged, Lewis accused Brown of having an affair with his girlfriend.
Sergeant Alva Douglas, the Constabulary Communication Network’s liaison officer for Westmoreland, told the Observer that during the dispute, Lewis reportedly left the park and went to his house, which is less than a mile away.
Lewis, Sergeant Douglas said, reportedly returned sometime later, armed with a machete, which he allegedly used to chop Brown to the head and other parts of the body.
Brown was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar General Hospital where he was initially treated. He was later transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital where he died from his injuries at about 2:30 am yesterday while undergoing treatment.
Sergeant Douglas added that shortly after Brown was chopped, Lewis fled the park but he was chased, held and chopped by residents, who later handed him over to the police.
Brown is the third person murdered in the parish since the start of the year. Last year, 35 of the 1,045 murders committed in the island took place in Westmoreland.
