Protesting vendors stall traffic in Spanish Town
TRAFFIC was disrupted temporarily on Burke Road in Spanish Town yesterday as several vendors peddling their goods in that area blocked sections of the busy road after police removed stalls from which they were selling.
“The vendors were basically selling in the road so we had to remove the stalls,” Deputy Superintendent Hugh Bish of the Spanish Town Police Station, told the Observer last night.
The stalls, he said, were mounted near the Texaco gas station on Burke Road.
Like Kingston, the problem of illegal vending has been plaguing sections of St Catherine, particularly Spanish Town, Linstead and recently Portmore.
But while acknowledging that illegal vending is indeed a serious problem in the old capital, the St Catherine Parish Council said nothing can be done as there are no facilities for dry goods sellers.
