Wins for Ferncourt, Lime Hall
LIME HALL, St Ann — Ferncourt High and Lime Hall Primary schools in St Ann are the winners of the Urban Development Corporation’s (UDC) seventh and final Best Kept School Competition in the parish.
The schools collected their prizes last Wednesday at an awards ceremony held at the Ferncourt High School auditorium in Claremont.
In the secondary category, Ferncourt walked away with the UDC main prize of $20,000 and a trophy, while in the primary section, Lime Hall copped the cash award of $l5,000, along with the UDC trophy.
Lime Hall Primary also received the Victoria Mutual Building Society prize for its effort in landscaping, as well as the R O Walters trophy and $10, 000 for being the most improved school, while Chester All-Age won the St Ann Development Company (SADCo) prize for the Best Kept Classroom. Ocho Rios High took home the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) award for its effort in the competition.
In the essay competition on ‘The Environment and You”, Ocho Rios Primary made its presence felt with three students receiving top awards. They are Samantha Higgins, Cavel Clarke and Latoya Edwards.
The other schools in the competition were Parry Town, St Ann’s Bay, Priory, Chalky Hill Primary, and Marcus Garvey Technical High.
Each school was presented with a UDC certificate of appreciation.
Students told to protect environment
OCHO RIOS, St Ann — Education Minister Maxine Henry Wilson has urged students in St Ann to utilise their schools as “lighthouses” for proper environmental practices within the parish.
She said a school should be a lighthouse for a community and country, by demonstrating acceptable behaviour.
4-H Clubs get flood relief
DENBIGH, Clarendon — The 4-H Clubs in Clarendon, which were severely affected by flood waters during the period of May to September this year, have received assistance totaling about $55,000.
At a presentation ceremony last week at the Denbigh 4-H Training Centre, some 12 schools were presented with cheques ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 to help restore their agricultural projects.
The schools include Bunkers Hill, Frankfield and Denbigh Primary and Junior High, John Austin, Chapelton, and Tollgate All-age; and Denbigh, Vere Technical and Central High.
