Man accused of street robbery gets $80,000 bail
WESTERN BUREAU — Nineteen year-old Retirement, St James resident, Elton Robinson, who is accused of robbery with aggravation, was granted $80,000 bail on Wednesday when he appeared in court.
He and an accomplice are alleged to have used ratchet knives to hold up a man before taking away his pouch containing $2,000 on Market Street in Montego Bay at about 10:30 am on July 23.
The court was told that after the men committed the crime, they ran from the scene and the complainant chased them.
The investigating officer who saw as the complainant chased the men also reportedly witnessed the 19-year-old youth throwing stones at the complainant.
Robinson was later arrested and charged with robbery with aggravation.
In the city’s Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, attorney Clive Mullings, who represents the accused, took issue with the allegations, saying his client was innocent.
He said the allegations would be “hotly contested” at the trial and the issue of identification would feature prominently in the case.
At the same time, he asked that Robinson, who is the father of a young daughter, be granted bail.
RM Valerie Stephens subsequently offered bail.
Robinson is to stand trial on September 18.
