10 in Spaldings riot charged
THE Spaldings police yesterday detained 16 more people, bringing to 42 the number of persons held in connection with Saturday’s violent assault on the Spaldings Police Station in Clarendon.
Of this number, 10 have been arrested and charged with malicious destruction of property and breaches of the Public Order Act, two for charges unrelated to the melee, 15 have been released while another 15 are still being interrogated.
Police have released the names of six of those charged, as the other four are to face an identification parade.
The six charged with malicious destruction of property, arson and breaches of the Public Order Act are:
* David Wright, 38, alias “Pella” of Bailliston;
* Anthony Skeen, 22, a taxi driver of Kingsland district;
* Gary Doeman, 26, also called “Quack” of Limit district;
* Carlos Bailey, 18, also known as “Lazarus” of Alston;
* Wayne Foster, otherwise called “Ben”, also of Alston; and
* Melvin Hunt, 23, alias “Cuppie” of Santa Hill.
Wright was also arrested on Monday and charged with possession of ganja.
“We are still in the process of identifying and finding the culprits,” said Senior Superintendent Reneto Adams, who heads the Crime Management Unit, which has sent 40 of its men to assist the Manchester police in trying to restore normality in the usually quiet rural town.
“We are also at this moment identifying the perpetrators by looking at videotapes, getting eyewitness accounts and most importantly through police intelligence,” Adams told the Observer yesterday.
He said both Spaldings and Alston were quiet yesterday.
Those arrested are alleged to have been in the company of a group of residents who went to the Spaldings Police Station on Saturday, demanding the release of three men who they had accused of being involved in a series of robberies in the Alston area.
When the police refused their demands, the residents stoned the station, extensively damaging the building and also a number of police vehicles.
A Mazda motorcar belonging to one of the men they were demanding to be released was also set ablaze in the incident.
