Four suspects detained in cop’s murder

OUR people have been detained in connection with Friday night’s brutal murder of police constable Basil Black and the injury of Corporal Kevon Chambers in Duhaney Park, St Andrew.
The four suspects, the police said last night, were picked up between Sunday night and yesterday morning in the Duhaney Park area.
The two lawmen were responding to a call from Police Control that gunshots were being fired in the vicinity of the Duhaney Park Health Centre. However, they were ambushed and fired on by gunmen armed with high-powered weapons.
Constable Black was pronounced dead at hospital while Corporal Chambers was admitted. He was said to be stable yesterday.
In the meanwhile, human rights group, Jamaicans For Justice yesterday condemned the murder of Constable Basil Black and the shooting of Corporal Chambers.
“The loss of life of yet another member of the police force to violent crime is deeply disturbing. The manner of the shooting, where it appears there was a deliberate ambush, aimed specifically at the police, signals a new level of depraved criminality,” the group’s chairman Dr Carolyn Gomes said.
Said Dr Gomes: “Jamaicans for Justice recognises the police as the first purveyors of justice whose primary responsibility is the protection of the citizens of this country. An attack on the police is an attack on the justice system and must be condemned. The loss of life of a number of the force and, indeed, of any Jamaican citizen due to violent crime, is cause for deep regret. We fervently hope that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be apprehended and brought before the courts.”
