Jamaica Mexico in two-day talks
JAMAICA and Mexico yesterday opened two days of talks at the foreign ministry in Kingston aimed at developing co-operation between both countries in a range of areas.
“We shall… focus on the dynamic relationship between Jamaica and Mexico at the bilateral level,” Ambassador Evadne Coye, Jamaica’s undersecretary at the foreign ministry told delegates attending the fifth meeting of the Jamaica/Mexico Binational Commission.
“We are very pleased at the tremendous level of co-operation that we have pursued under the umbrella of the Binational Commission since its establishment,” Coye said.
She described the commission, established in 1993 during Prime Minister P J Patterson’s official visit to Mexico, as a “fitting testimony” to the friendly relations both countries have enjoyed over the years.
The meeting is examining areas such as education, culture, science and technology, security, narco-trafficking and drug abuse in addition to economic, trade and investment co-operation.
Said Coye: “We look forward to two days of fruitful development as we continue to deepen the ties of friendship and co-operation between Jamaica and Mexico for all citizens.”
Mexico’s ambassador to Jamaica, Benito Andion, who is leading his country’s delegation, suggested that Mexico could learn from Jamaica in the areas of tourism and the eradication of lethal yellowing.
At the end of the meeting today, both countries are expected to adopt and sign the final act embodying follow-up work to be pursued in bringing projects to reality.
