Sandals Ocho Rios to spread environment message in schools
AN ambitious project to take the message of environmental preservation into rural schools has been launched by Sandals Ocho Rios, in collaboration with Recycle for Life and Friends of the Sea.
The new programme targets basic, all-age, high schools and community college students and covers areas such as protecting the environment, recycling, essay competitions, and tree plantings among others.
Last week, the Exchange All-Age, St Ann was the first stop in the awareness drive.
There, a recycling project was launched and the community participated in a talk on the, environment. Plants were also presented to students.
A recycling bin and plastic bags to collect the plastic drinks bottles were also presented. The bottles will be handed over to Recycle for Life.
Sandals, environment and safety manager, David Smith, and representatives of Friends of the Sea and Recycle for Life shared information on recycling and the rewards of caring for the environment.
Smith said Sandals Ocho Rios’ general manager, Michael Darby, was keen on using the children to get the environmental message across.
“This is just the start of what will be a massive environmental awareness campaign throughout schools in rural Jamaica,” Smith said.
Acting principal of Exchange All-Age, Letrice Smith, welcomed the presentation and said it would go a far way in increasing the awareness of the environment among students.
