Ex-cop shot dead at his service station
A former head of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, retired police superintendent, Albert Richards, was shot dead at his petrol station yesterday afternoon by one of two gunmen who tried to rob him.
One of the robbers was shot and injured by a licensed firearm owner and is now in hospital under police guard. The other escaped in a waiting motor car.
Police said that the shootings took place at about 2:00 pm at the National service station on Mona Road, St Andrew, a few metres from the University of the West Indies campus.
According to the police, Richards was at the station when he was approached by two gunmen who demanded money. He resisted and held on to the gunman’s Glock 9mm pistol, but was shot during the struggle.
Both men were taken to hospital where Richards was pronounced dead and the bandit admitted. His Glock pistol and six rounds of ammunition were confiscated by the police.
The shootings pulled a large crowd to the scene and residents of the normally quiet neighbourhood were visibly shaken.
Among police investigators at the scene were the head of Police Area 4, Assistant Commissioner Arthur “Stitch” Martin and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, Osbourne Dyer, both of whom worked with Richards during his tenure at the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
