Clarendon residents benefit from priority mail system
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Approximately 115 residents of Clarendon have benefited from the priority mail system since the service was introduced in July last year at post offices across the island.
In an interview with JIS News on January 21, Lissette Allen, postmistress at the May Pen Post Office, said that there has been a 20 per cent improvement in usage each month since the introduction of the service.
“Looking at our cash flow, the use of the priority mail system has been improving every month since we started off with 10 persons in July, with a 400 per cent increase in December alone,” she said.
St Ann chamber donates chairs to school
RUNAWAY BAY, St Ann — The St Ann Chamber of Commerce has donated 15 chairs valued at $10,000 to the Runaway Bay All-Age School in the parish.
Andrew Grant, president of the chamber, handed over the gift to principal, B E Miles last week Thursday at the school.
Grant said the donation was in keeping with the chamber’s mandate of supporting education in the parish.
Plans for 118th anniversary of Busta’s birth
BLENHEIM, Hanover — Plans are in high gear for the celebration of the 118th anniversary of the birth of National Hero, Sir Alexander Bustamante, to be held on February 24 at Blenheim in Hanover.
The celebrations are being co-ordinated jointly by the Hanover arm of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) and the Hanover Parish Council, which has pledged over $100,000 for the event.
Several schools, churches, agencies and cultural groups from across the parish are slated to participate in the activities.
Over 12,000 titles produced in nine months
KINGSTON — The Survey Division of the National Land Agency (NLA) has processed 95,777 transactions and produced 12,444 new titles between April and December 2001.
Land and Environment Minister Horace Dalley said 30 per cent of the documents received were returned due to non-adherence to the registration requirements. With regard to survey plans, the rejection rate for plans lodged was approximately 50 per cent.
Police to start public education programme
BAMBOO, St Ann — The police in Bamboo, St Ann will launch a public education programme for students attending schools in the area on Monday, February 18 at the Free Hill All-Age School.
Topics such as Domestic Violence, Carnal Abuse, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), and Conflict Resolution will be addressed during the sessions.
In an interview with JIS News, Sergeant Nehemiah Gordon, who is in charge of the Bamboo Police Station, explained that the objectives of the programme were to sensitise the youngsters about the effects of drug abuse and sexual offences, and “to help curb violent behaviour”.
