Crocs are important
ALTHOUGH crocodiles inspire fear and fascination in us, few people know that they are an important part of the ecology of Jamaica’s wetlands and protected by WildLife Protection Act.
However, persons who visit swamps, rivers, or any other water bodies must be aware that these generally large, ponderous, amphibious animals, are carnivorous in habit and are inclined to be more aggressive during nesting seasons.
There are severe fines and legal consequences for anyone killing the animals. The Natural Resources Conservation Authority should be contacted if it believed that the animals have strayed out of their natural habitat and are a threat to human life.
