THESE three brown pelicans were spotted nesting on Refuge Cay — a mangrove island near Port Royal within Kingston Harbour — during a bird count in the area by BirdLife Jamaica recently.
The area is an important nesting site for the birds, which are considered a globally endangered Caribbean endemic sub-species.
BirdLife Jamaica — the island’s only organisation specifically concentrating on the conservation of birds and their habits — said that in recent decades, Caribbean Pelicans have been in trouble owing to similar factors which have resulted in the demise of the species in North America.
The organisation and the University of the West Indies are to develop a collaborative project to study the harbour’s pelican population to determine their survival, population numbers, and how the condition of Kingston Harbour is affecting the nesting birds.
