Man charged with attempted rape of friend’s daughter
CABINET maker, Delford Cunningham, of Catherine Hall in Montego Bay, who is accused of trying to rape the 12 year-old daughter of his male friend, is to return to court on September 10 when the case will be tried.
He was granted bail on Tuesday in the sum of $80,000, when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court.
The police reported that the complainant was at her father’s home in Catherine Hall on July 29 when the 26 year-old tradesman visited the house. Upon arrival he allegedly asked the complainant’s older half-sister to purchase a phone card for him.
When the sister left, the complainant reportedly went to her room to read a book and it was then that Cunningham allegedly tried to assault her. The girl reportedly struggled with him, as he tried to remove her clothing, until they heard sounds that indicated that her half-sister had returned. It was only then that Cunningham reportedly released the girl.
The girl reportedly told her sister of the incident and the following day her mother took her to the police station where they made a report. Cunningham was subsequently arrested and charged.
But when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, the investigating officer said there had been no evidence of any disrobing having taken place or any sign of injury to the complainant.
Cunningham was later granted bail and warned to stay away from the complainant who has since returned to Kingston. He is also to report to the Freeport police every Tuesday between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.
