Darliston Division gets new councillor caretaker
TREVOR “Spur” Jemieson has been elected to represent the People’s National Party (PNP) in the Darliston Division in the next local government election. He will replace sitting councillor, Richard Spence, who is overseas receiving medical treatment.
In a recent selection process, Jemieson, a bus operator, secured 143 votes of the 195 votes cast in that Westmoreland division. His rival, Florence Walters-Taylor, a teacher at the Maud McLeod High School, received 52 votes. A total of 344 delegates were eligible to cast their ballots.
In addressing the delegates, Prime Minister P J Patterson, and Member of Parliament for the Eastern Westmoreland, urged party supporters to unite around the victor.
“Please remember, whether we are for comrade Taylor or comrade Jemieson, we are all for the People’s National Party,” he said before they voted. “And when this is over, we can come together as one family to make sure that the Darliston Division remains a bulwark for the People’s National Party.”
And in taking a swipe at the opposition Jamaica Labour Party’s recent campaign launch on his home turf, Patterson made it clear that he intended to keep his seat. According to him, he will be campaigning on his record.
“After representing this constituency for so many years, more particularly after being the Member of Parliament and the Prime Minister for over 10 years, I am prepared to campaign on my record. Not about promises, not things I intend to do but thing that I have done,” said Patterson.
