South Gully project almost completed
THE tourist resort of Montego Bay could soon be rid of the eyesore of the South Gully Project’s construction site, as contractors frantically try to meet the August 31st completion deadline.
According to a source close to the project, work is expected to be completed along the city’s main streets by the end of next month.
“We are trying to pave most of the small roads now, and most of the roads will be done by the end of July,” the source said. “Now we’re doing the upper end of the project, and the Princess Street area. Dome and Creek streets will be next.”
Sections of Howard Cooke Boulevard were paved recently, and a wide median created between the incoming and outgoing traffic to protect a 32-inch main located under the roadway. There are plans afoot to put in a municipal car park atop space provided once the project is completed. Trees and flowers will be used to beautify the area.
The controversial South Gully Drainage Improvement Project has been a bane on the tourist resort for years as the project dragged on past several completion deadlines.
Added to the construction site of the yet to be completed US$125m civic centre, and the rerouting of traffic to accommodate infrastructural work, the South Gully has contributed to the western city’s traffic congestion.
