Youth competition named after Malcolm
A youth football competition scheduled to start early next month is likely to bear the name of the late national player, Stephen ‘Shorty’ Malcolm.
This announcement was made by the president of the St James football association, George Evans, at a press conference at the La Mirage hotel in Montego Bay on Tuesday.
The FA will be staging under-15, under-17 and under-20 competitions over the summer holidays, beginning in the first week of July.
“Former world boxing champion, Lennox Lewis, has made a commitment to us, through the Hart Group, to contribute sponsorship in the region of US$5,000 to run these three competitions,” Evans explained. “This sum should be sufficient to cover the expenses of the three tournaments.”
Malcolm, who played for Montego Bay’s Seba United in the National Premier League, died in a car crash in Trelawny in January.
Catherine Hall won the Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) St James under-12 football competition recently, when they defeated Barracks Road 1-0 in the final at the UDC field in Montego Bay.
