Eight advance in St James Division Two football
Eight teams have advanced to the next round of the Guardian Life St James Division Two football competition, while another four should be decided when the schedule of postponed matches is completed next week.
The qualifiers to date are New Johns from Zone ‘A’, Westgreen from Zone ‘B’, Barrett Town from Zone ‘C’ and Spot Valley from Zone ‘C’, Granville Strikers from Zone ‘D’, Upsetters and Revelation from Zone ‘E’, and Salt Spring from Zone ‘F’. The remaining qualifiers will come from Zones ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘D’ and ‘F’.
The main challengers for the second berth in Zone ‘A’ are Kempshot and Gutters, while Little Miami, Progress and Ibyssiani are the competitors in with a chance in Zone ‘B’. Seba Strikers are the front-runners for a place from Zone ‘D’, while Norwood Dribblers are racing with Norwood Strikers to advance from Zone ‘F’.
The competition continues today (Saturday) with Salt Spring playing Norwood Dribblers in a key match at Albion, while in a double-header at the UDC field, Tower Hill take on Revelation before Little Miami go up against Ibyssiani. Tomorrow (Sunday), Westgreen host Ramble Hill at Catherine Hall, and Seba Strikers play Cornwall Court at the UDC field.
In matches played recently, Marl Road paved Spring Gardens 2-0, Norwood Strikers plucked Flower Hill 4-1, Westgreen blanked Future Youth 2-0, Gutters washed away Springfield 8-1, Little Miami deported Ramble 2-1, Flower Hill outscored Norwood Gardens 4-1, Revelation dug up Marl Road 2-0, New Johns shot down Kempshot 2-0, Tomorrow’s People Youth mowed Spring Garden 2-0, Upsetters scaled Tower Hill 5-1, Progress beat Ramble 2-1, Westgreen defeated Little Miami 3-1, and Granville disarmed Gunners 2-0.
The sponsorship is about $150,000, and the competition features 30 teams chosen along geographical lines. From that number, 12 teams will advance to the next stage of the competition, which will consist of four zones.
There are 10 new teams in this year’s competition. About 12 of these teams are community-based.
