Software tool to manage rainforests
FRESH and realistic hope for the salvation of the remaining tropical rainforests is now successfully being provided by a computer programme designed in the United Kingdom. For the first time this enables people to understand the likely effects of a particular forest-management plan or to compare the effects of alternatives.
Specifically designed for the needs of a wide range of concerned people –ranging from forest-dependent communities to commercial logging companies and academic researchers — the system is the first with the potential to meet the aspirations of the rural poor, a group essentially ignored by previous systems, say the developers.
