MONTEGO BAY, ST James — Deputy Police Commissioner, Owen Ellington, yesterday shied away from commenting on a reports by the Toronto Star on Sunday that a female flight attendant disarmed 21-year-old Stephen Fray, who hijacked CanJet charter flight 918 at the Sangster International Airport on April 19.

Ellington refused to comment on whether the female Canadian flight attendant had grabbed Fray’s .38 revolver out of his waistband, while Jamaican security forces created a distraction.

However, the Canadian newspaper’s story, which quoted Ellington at length, directly contradicted local press reports that awarded top marks to the Jamaican security forces for disarming Fray while one of his family members distracted him.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was among the many persons who praised the Jamaican security forces for diverting a near tragedy by successfully disarming Fray. Karl Angell, Director of Communications for Jamaica’s Constabulary Communications Network (CCN) told Chat! that he was unaware of the flight attendant’s heroics.

Describing Walters as a ‘modest yet confident man’ the report quoted him as saying that the reportedly depressed Fray — who styled himself ‘Genius’ — demanded $8 trillion in reponse to his question as to what he really wanted.

“All his conversations were about billions and trillions,” the newspaper quoted Walters.

In the meantime Fray who up to late yesterday evening was still being interrogated by the police, has yet to be charged.
