Gareth Henry on BWF ranking list
Saturday, November 07, 2009
Top Jamaican junior Gareth Henry has vaulted to position 289 on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) list, according to the latest international rankings.
This is the 18-year-old's first time on the list and is due in large part to his making it to round three in the recent Pan Am Games where he lost to the eventual winner Kevin Cordon of Guatemala.
In that tournament, Henry defeated Bernado Villegas of Chile 21-19, 21-5 in the first round; beat Luis Trejo of Mexico 21-12, 21-9 in the second round, but lost 14-21, 14-21 to Kevin Cordon, the second seed of Guatemala in the third round.
The only other Jamaican on the BWF list at this time is the Canadian-based Charles Pyne sitting at 268 in the men's singles rankings. Pyne also played in the Pan Am Games where he lost to Salvador Sanchez (#7 seed - Mexico) 21-19, 16-21, 21-10 in the second round after getting a bye in the first.
