It's a Classy Prospect in Royal Lancaster Trophy

First-time runner Classy Prospect will run from mid pack in a 12-horse field but has done enough in his preparation to be made the 6-5 morning-line favourite for the $715,000 Royal Lancaster Trophy juvenile maiden special weight dash over 1,000 metres round for native-bred colts and geldings at Caymanas Park today.

Possessing enough competitive quality to be made the feature of the 11-race programme, the event has also attracted a number of forward-looking native-bred two-year-olds, who have the look of providing an enthralling contest over the snappy trip. First post is at noon.

Among the other runners who are worth honourable mention are Majestic, Mr Fabulous, Golden Harvest, Royal Navy and Blazing Star. However, if the promising favourite could reproduce his exercise reports with a final track workout on Sunday morning of 1:07.3 for 1,100 metres by 1:01.0 for 1,000 metres is anything to go by, then they will all have a task on hand to keep the Francis Barnett, Edison Chai & Louis Lyn's dark bay colt out of the winner's enclosure. A well-bred half-brother to Jack Be Good, Classy Prospect has been prepared well for his racing baptism by the champion and leading conditioner Wayne DaCosta and should all go well with the son of Region of Merit out of Good Prospect (Texas Prospector), he should win with much in hand.

Jockey Shane Ellis, who combined well with DaCosta in midweek to share the day's laurels, and a jockey who has good, steady hands in dealing with precocious youngsters, has been called upon once again to ride Classy Prospect.

With youngsters nothing is certain and should an aberration occur, the mantle could fall to Majestic from the stables of Philip Feanny to come into his own and make amends for his close finish to Margin Call on last after looking all over the winner within shades of the wire.

The journey reduced, and coming in at a mere 49.0kg, compared with 54.0kg for Classy Prospect, with top claiming apprentice Doushane Gordon astride, Majestic, the Bingham Stables's chestnut colt could be a real threat to the far-striding favourite.

Others who are expected to be in close attendance to pick up the pieces, include debutants Mr Fabulous, a well-grown chestnut colt by Traditional out of Tech All (Technology), the mount of Dane Nelson, Golden Harvest, an attractive-looking chestnut colt by Region Of Merit out of That's My Girl (Wise Emissary) partnered by Hubert Bartley, a stable mate of Classy Prospect and Royal Navy a dark bay colt by Vanadium out of Michelka (Pat N Jac) with Javour Simpson up.
