Old Harbour's daCosta Cup manager distances team from U-16's indiscretion

OLD HARBOUR, St Catherine - The manager of the Old Harbour High daCosta Cup team has sought to clear the air about the team's involvement in disciplinary actions handed out by the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) earlier this week.
On Monday ISSA banned the Old Harbour High Under-16 team from this year and the 2010 season while banning the coach Kurt Brown from having anything to do with that team for two years. The ISSA also extended a probation on the school until 2011.
The actions were taken during a meeting with the school on Monday after it was discovered they had used a boy in the Under-16 team who had not been "properly transferred or registered by the school".
Earlier, the school's principal Linton Weir had made a pre-emptive strike by withdrawing the school from all ISSA-related football competitions, including the daCosta Cup, where they had advanced to the Inter-zone round.
Devon Sayers, manager of the daCosta Cup team, has, however, sought to distance his team from the incidents involving the Under-16 team and coach Brown.
Sayers told the Observer in an interview on Wednesday, that the "daCosta Cup team was under a totally different management from the Under-14 and Under-16 teams".
While offering apologies to "the community and our sponsors and fans", he said Brown had nothing to do with the daCosta Cup team.
He said they understood the decision that was taken by the principal. "Mr Weir had to make a tough decision to try and protect the other sports that the school took part in," but added it was a tough pill to swallow as they were confident the Old Harbour team would be competitive.
Old Harbour had finished second to Glenmuir High on goal-difference in Zone I in the preliminary rounds after both had finished on 22 points.
Garvey Maceo, the 2007 champions who were third in Zone I, took Old Harbour's place in the Inter-zone round.
Brown became the second coach to be banned this season after ISSA earlier this season sanctioned Kemar Wilby of York Castle, who was found guilty of abusing the referee following the September 17 Zone D first-round game against Aabuthnott Gallimore High where he accused the officials of bias after his team lost 3-4.
