JC resume hunt for double as Manning Cup second round begins

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Fresh from securing their first hold on the Walker Cup trophy, Jamaica College (JC) will continue their hunt for the corporate area double when they tackle Calabar High as round two of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup begins today.

The Alfred Henry-coached JC, who last won the Manning Cup in 2007, will be hoping to get the better of arch-rivals Calabar in the first match of a double header at the Constant Spring Football Field starting at 1:00 pm.

The 'Dark Blues' from Old Hope Road had topped Group A in the preliminary round with 27 points after winning nine and losing one of their 10 matches. They scored a competition-topping 54 goals, while conceding only five.

Conversely, Calabar, who won the last of their three titles in 2005, progressed to the second round by placing second in Group C with 25 points.

The boys from Red Hills Road had secured eight wins, lost three and drawn one of their 12 outings.

The day's other encounter will see reigning champions St George's, who lost the Walker Cup final 4-5 on penalties to JC on Friday, squaring off against Wolmer's in the 3:00 pm feature match.

The 'Light Blues' from North Street topped Group F with 26 points. The Neville Bell-coached team won eight of their 10 preliminary round games and drew two.

Wolmer's finished second in Group D on 16 points following five wins, one draw and two defeats.
