Blazers, Swift Sons in final showdown

Livingston Scott

Saturday, July 04, 2009

Waterhouse Blazers booked their place in the SDC/Insports South Conference Basketball final against Swift Sons 'A' tonight after beating Edgewater Wolverines 78-57 in game three of their best-of-three series at the National Stadium courts on Thursday.

Waterhouse, whose only defeat this season came in game one of the semi-finals, rallied from 0-1 down in
the series and won the last two
games convincingly.

Raymond Layne was the Blazers' top-scorer with 16 points and 16 rebounds and he was well supported by Kirk Shaw with 14 points and Brandon Grant who pulled 18 rebounds along with six points.

Carl Wellington was the only player who really turned up on the night for Edgewater, he posted a game-high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Waterhouse came out business like in the first period as they ran away with a 19-10 lead at the first interval.

But the Wolverines rallied strongly in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents 19-12 to reduce the deficit to three (31-29) at the half.

However, in the third period Waterhouse regained the ascendancy posting 21 points to their opponents' 15 to lead 52-45 going into the last quarter.

Any thoughts Edgewater may have had about a comeback in the last period was quickly dashed, as the Blazers piled on 26 points to Edgewater's 16 to take an easy win in the end.

Game one of the best-of-three decider begins at 7:45 pm this evening at the National Stadium courts.

This will be preceded by the third place play-off between Edgewater Wolverines and Blazing Panthers at 4:00 pm and the Modern Rubber Stamps/Joy McLeod Custom Brokers Women's League final at 6:00 pm.

Game two of the final is scheduled for tomorrow at the same venue.
