. Mom says son, Indian bookmaker are friends
Dania Bogle
Thursday, February 08, 2007

Marlon Samuels' mother Daphne Lunan says she doesn't believe her son is involved in any wrongdoing after Indian police late yesterday accused the West Indies cricketer of leaking team information to an illegal bookmaker during the recent one-day series in India.

In fact, Lunan said her son and alleged bookmaker Mukesh Kochar had been friends for a long time.

"This is a long time friendship. over six years now because all when him (Marlon) foot sick and him not playing him (Kochar) call him and encourage him and tell him him must continue and not to worry," she told the Observer yesterday.
The mother of eight said the relationship between the Indian and her son extended beyond cricket matches.

"All when he is not playing match he (Kochar) call him because the last time with his foot (injury) he called. and said he is a good player, he must continue, that's it."
Lunan said she herself has spoken to Kochar on several occasions.

"He call me all the time. is a big man and him always call and say Marlon must call him or him call Marlon and talk to him, that's how I get to know him."

Lunan said she has been in shock ever since another of her sons, David, told her he heard the report on radio yesterday.
"I was so shocked to hear that; right now I'm feeling so nervous 'cause I don't believe Marlon mix up into those things.

"That would be so surprising. I don't think so because when you fix match, don't you have to collect, and they find him collect anything?"
