NDM, G2K want Davies to resign as PAC chairman, opposition spokesman

Saturday, November 07, 2009

TWO political groups have called for the resignation of former minister of finance Dr Omar Davies as opposition spokesman of finance and chairman of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) over his handling of the employment contract for Derick Latibeaudiere, who was sacked as Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) governor last Friday.

Davies. accused of poor judgement

In separate statements yesterday, the National Democratic Movement (NDM), and the Jamaica Labour Party-affiliated Generation 2000 (G2K) urged for the removal of Davies, citing his "poor judgement" and "incompetence" in unilaterally approving the contract that saw the governor benefiting from an exorbitant compensation package which shot from a basic $11.2 million per annum in 2006 to $38 million this year.

The NDM said the Latibeaudiere contract and other decisions made by the former finance minister, including the forward sale of bauxite and the formation of FINSAC, proved that he was not only incompetent, but dishonest, irresponsible, reckless and "unpatriotic".

"The Jamaican people and the People's National Party (PNP) cannot afford Dr Omar Davies to remain in politics and a representative of the people, the vast majority who are poor, destitute and uneducated," the NDM declared.

The G2K, in the meantime, said "irresponsible" actions by the former finance minister have come at great cost to taxpayers and have made him unworthy of chairing the PAC.

Said the G2K: "By agreeing to such repugnant contractual terms, Davies has effectively demonstrated that he is in no way worthy or even capable of serving as PAC chairman. The PAC requires a chairman who is beyond reproach - a true vanguard and purveyor of the people's interest, which Davies clearly is not."
