Cop in custody after fatal shooting of spouse
Thursday, June 25, 2009
A police constable was yesterday morning taken into custody following the shooting death of his spouse at their home in the Portmore community of Westchester, St Catherine.
The police were yesterday tight-lipped about the incident but an Observer source said the cop's spouse, identified as Jacqueline Jobeson, was hit in the neck when the policeman's gun went off. She died on
the spot.
Head of the St Catherine South police, Superintendent Marlon Nesbeth, said the Bureau of Special Investigation was conducting a probe into the incident.
"He is in custody pending the investigation," Nesbeth said.
The cop is said to be assigned to the Narcotics Division.
In February, another cop was taken into custody after being accused of shooting his spouse.
The policeman reportedly told his colleagues that the woman had taken up his service weapon and in his attempt to retrieve it from her, she fell and the gun went off, killing her.
Between January 1 and May 30 this year, a total of 81 people have been fatally shot by
the police.
