Marcus Garvey's great grandson on carnal abuse charge

Thursday, August 14, 2008

DEVON Garvey, the great grandson of National Hero Marcus Garvey, is now facing a charge of carnal abuse stemming from allegations that he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl this year.

Allegations are that on May 31, Garvey and the girl were making their way home from church in their St Andrew community, when he took the child to his house and sexually assaulted her.

The girl made a report to her mother and Garvey, 18, was arrested. He was later charged with carnal abuse.

When the case came up for mention in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, the matter was adjourned until September 8, when a preliminary inquiry is scheduled to begin.

Garvey is being represented by attorney Christopher Townsend.
