Police identified the dead man as Cheston Blake, 23, otherwise called 'Pepper' of that community, while the toddler was admitted to hospital and his 15-year-old aunt treated and released.
According to residents of 'Falken,' a section of phase two in the community where the incident took place, shortly after 10:00 am, the teenager was combing Blake's hair on her verandah when a gunman approached, entered the premises and opened fire.
When the gunfire ended, residents said Blake was found suffering from gunshot wounds. The toddler had a gunshot wound to the back of the neck and the teenager was grazed by a bullet on her abdomen. The gunman escaped.
"I really don't know what happened, I still trying to find out myself. I just know that my little brother get shot and that them have him down at the hospital. I am just waiting to hear if he will be alright," cried the toddler's sister, who sat fidgeting with her cell phone while an army of ants made their way towards a clot of blood beside her on the verandah.
Investigators at the Seaview Gardens Police Station said that they were following strong leads into yesterday's incident, but feared that the shooting, which they said was as a result of an ongoing turf war, could cause an outbreak of gun attacks in other sections of the community.
"Is pure war can start all over the place because of this shooting, man from all over have their friends in the war and when these things happen you will find men from other sections joining into the foolishness," an officer who didn't want to be named, told the Observer.
But while the police vowed to control the recent flare-up which has already claimed at least three lives, many expressed concerns about how close to the police station yesterday's incident occurred.
The house which had several bullet holes, was less than 100 metres down the pot-hole riddled road which led to the police station.
"Them boy here getting from bad to worse, look how near the station is and is not like is night. Is broad daylight them come shoot up the people them place. Them don't respect the police," said the perturbed officer.
