PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) - Magistrate Adrian Darmanie has sentenced two students in Trinidad to community service after they pleaded guilty to having previous knowledge of the Communication Studies exam paper set by the Barbados-based Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).
The students, Nyron Toney and Scott Joseph, were sentenced to 100 hours of community service and one year of supervised probation when they appeared in the Tunapuna Court, east of here, on Monday.
The magistrate said the two students of the St Augustine Community College should not be held personally liable for the scam that forced students here to rewrite the exams at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) level.
The magistrate said that the two students, who were also told to apologise to their families in court for the incident, had pleaded guilty to the offence and had co-operated with the police during the investigations. He said there was also no evidence that the students had actually paid for the exam papers.
"They already have a taint on them whether or not a conviction is recorded," the magistrate said, adding that the students could apply for the convictions not to go on record.
