JOHN Johnson, the man accused of stabbing to death a wheelchair-bound male beggar in Cross Roads last month, was remanded in custody for psychiatric evaluation when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court Wednesday.
Police arrested Johnson on June 17 - hours after Lindon Headley was stabbed to death at Tom Redcam Drive. Johnson allegedly sprinted off in the direction of the Jamaica Defence Force Up Park Camp base and was subdued by a soldier who disarmed him of a bloodied knife.
The St Andrew North Police told the Observer days after the incident that Johnson had a record of mental illness and said persons in the area where the stabbing occurred, alleged that he was acting "strange" prior to the attack.
Wednesday, a dirty, barefooted Johnson appeared in court in plaid underpants and a stained T-shirt... his feet swollen.
He appeared sedated when his case was called up. He also seemed to have difficulty as he limped back to the holding area after being informed that he would remain behind bars until August 20, when a report on his mental state is expected to be presented to the court.
