A security guard was yesterday shot and injured when gunmen held up a mail van he was escorting. The injured guard was admitted to hospital.
According to the police, the mail van had just left the compound of the Central Sorting Office on South Camp Road in Kingston, when three armed men in two cars blocked the vehicle's path. The armed men, said the police, jumped from their vehicles and opened fire at the occupants of the mail van, hitting the security guard.
Police said the guard was shot in the shoulder and leg, but managed to return the fire before escaping from the vehicle along with an employee of the postal service. He managed to keep his firearm.
The robbers then looted the van and made off with several bags which contained an undetermined sum of cash and mail, the police said. Officers said they were travelling in a grey Toyota Corolla motor car and a burgundy vehicle.
