Caribbean police chiefs to meet in Jamaica

Monday, May 12, 2008

Police chiefs from across the region will assemble at the Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios on Wednesday for the 23rd annual conference of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP).

The police commissioners will discuss matters pertaining to regional co-operation in the suppression of criminal activities in the areas of narcotics, terrorism and organised crime.
High on the agenda also is the sharing of common services, including training, forensic analysis and research and the effective management of law enforcement agencies.

"This conference of Caribbean police commissioners comes at a critical juncture," said Karl Angell, the Jamaica Constabulary Force's director of communication. "It follows a recent special meeting of Caribbean heads of government where a number of regional security initiatives were discussed and implemented. This meeting will help to further solidify regional co-operation."

Head of the planning committee for the conference, Assistant Commissioner of Police Delworth Heath, said a wide range of activities have been planned for delegates and he is expecting positive results from the meeting.

"A lot of work has gone into the planning of this conference," said Heath. "Jamaica as the host jurisdiction is looking forward to a week of open and frank discussions. We have a number of panel discussions on the agenda for delegates ranging from 'drug trends in the Caribbean' to 'DNA technology'."

Jamaica's Commissioner of Police Hardley Lewin is expected to officially welcome his colleagues from the Caribbean at the opening session on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
