Prosecution says man confessed to cop's murder

Friday, April 25, 2008

ONE of the three men charged by the police with the robbery and murder of Constable Andre Chung has allegedly confessed to involvement in the killing.

The claim was made during a hearing in the Gun Court section of the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court Wednesday when the prosecution told the presiding magistrate, Glen Brown, that Rasamin Brown, who is charged alongside Christopher Thompson and Daniel Powell for the murder, made the confession during a question and answer session with police investigators.

Brown also allegedly implicated his co-accused during the question and answer session. The prosecution told the court that the trio stole a motor vehicle and while pretending to be robot taxi operators, picked up Chung and then proceeded to rob him of a laptop computer before taking him to another location where he was shot and killed.

In his client's defence, Brown's attorney told the court that his client did not voluntarily provide his responses during the question and answer session.
Brown opted, however, to deny bail for Brown, citing Brown's alleged confession as his primary reason.

The prosecution also noted that the case file had not yet been completed as a forensic report outlining findings relating to blood samples, as well as hair and clothing fragments was outstanding.

The matter was then rescheduled for May 26.
Chung's bullet-riddled body was found in the Tavistock area of Barbican on March 5, after residents, who reportedly heard several gunshots in the area the previous night, contacted the police.

The policeman's service firearm was also missing.
Chung, who was the first police officer to be killed in 2008, was reportedly a Chinese language student at the Chinese Benevolent Association and attended classes regularly. It is alleged that Chung attended class before boarding the taxi in which he was abducted and killed.

Brown, Powell and Thompson were subsequently implicated in the murder and were slapped with charges of murder, conspiracy to murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
